Tadasana or Mountain Pose is the most fundamental pose in yoga

It is a pose of stability, calm, strength and power.

It is a pose with immense energy, power and authority. The reason I emphasize the importance of Tadasana is that it creates balance in the body and it’s a good idea to start most or all poses off with Tadasana as a foundation. Also since the head stands are the hardest of the postures, Tadasana teaches the person the most and prepares them for the next posture of the day. Tadasana should be done with a strong feeling in the heart, with energy from the shoulders and back spreading down through the spine and through the limbs. All the energy should be spread throughout.

The idea behind the yoga pose ‘Tadasana is to make the body stable and powerful in all directions and to put oneself in a state of calm power. Many students don’t understand the importance of Tadasana – they see head stands as simple and not really worth putting too much energy into and when they see the teachers doing them they think it is not difficult or should only take about 5 minutes to get down. Tadasana should be done very slowly and with focus. The most important thing from the first class on is the teacher and the students should be very focused, with a specific goal – to be calm and strong.

To do Tadasana, slowly and calmly Begin in Tadasana, stand up and slowly lower your upper body down to the floor as you exhale and slightly inwards and exhale out as you lower your head and lower your hips first in the direction that you are going to go. To come back to a standing position, inhale down into your feet and lift with your legs and use your hips energy as you lift your chest. From a standing position inhale the entire body up to standing without jerking muscles.
